Experience a part of the seven biomes
of South Africa by exploring your own indigenous
fynbos (“fine bush”) rooftop garden.
Restios (Chondropetalum tectorum)
fringe the sundowner gazebo and water garden where,
in July, you can pick waterblommetjies (Aponogeton
distachyos) to add to your traditional Cape dinner
of “water-flower” stew!
In summer, you may be surprised by
a beautiful blue water lily (Nymphaea nouchali)
floating on the water and, in winter, by a white
arum lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica), described as
one of South Africa’s most famous plants,
opening in a corner of the stream.
Black-eyed Susans (Thunbergia alata)
watch as you shower alfresco and Cape honeysuckle
(Tecoma capensis) and wild olive trees (Olea europaea
subsp. africana) ensure rooftop privacy when you
soak up the sun during the day or search for the
Southern Cross at night.
A variety of birds, including the
Cape canary (Serinus canicollis), drink from the
water feature, which mirrors the bird-of-paradise
(Strelitzia reginae) that flowers during the months
of March to October.
